Ghomm of the Yellow Hand began life with nothing. Born to a struggling clan in the Dusk Hills, he was left in the wilderness to die when his people could no longer care for him. A strange Fae, tall and tree-like, discovered the abandoned child and raised him in silence. The creature never shared its name, so Ghomm called it the Helper, or sometimes the Quiet One. Though it rarely made a sound, the Helper provided him with guidance, and the bond between them deepened as Ghomm grew. His own name came from the low guttural noise the Fae occasionally produced in moments of satisfaction.
Under the Helper's direction, Ghomm learned to survive through hunting and theft. He captured beasts and stole livestock, which the Helper used in dark rituals. Animals were sacrificed and their entrails arranged in strange patterns, the Fae gesturing silently toward powers Ghomm could not see. For almost two decades, the Helper shaped him into something strong, cunning, and accustomed to blood. Ghomm followed without hesitation, believing in the purpose of these teachings even if he never fully understood them.
Eventually, the Helper brought Ghomm to face a mighty black dire-ram, scarred and dangerous, with one horn broken in battle. The two clashed savagely until Ghomm managed to cut its throat with his knife. In its dying moments, the creature's cursed spirit bound itself to his own, transforming him into a Skinwalker. When the frenzy faded, Ghomm glimpsed the Helper vanishing into the woods, never to return. Though abandoned once again, Ghomm did not despair. He accepted this as part of his fate and carried forward, fashioning a weapon from the ram's bones and setting out alone to forge his own path.
His wandering eventually brought him to a band of Skinwalkers, exiles and strays like himself, who were being tormented by a colossal knife-beetle. The insect had hounded them for days, starving them and driving them to desperation. Ghomm saw in their struggle a reflection of his own past and decided to intervene. Charging into battle with his bone club, he attacked the beetle's joints with practiced precision. Inspired, the others rallied beside him, copying his tactics until the beast collapsed. Though one of their number fell, they managed to secure victory together.
In the aftermath, Ghomm honoured the fallen by marking a shield with the insect's yellow blood and strapping it to his back. The others followed his example, staining themselves with the same colour in tribute. They named him Yellowhand, adopting the symbol as their emblem and welcoming him as kin. With them, Ghomm found the family he had never known, and though he spoke little, his bravery and selflessness gave him a voice of their own.
