Mordecai's background tells the story of a corrupt preacher who was sentenced to "Lumaya's Flame," a brutal trial where the accused is chained and set ablaze while reciting religious canticles. Those who complete the recitation, as their body is engulfed in flames, are forgiven their sins and the fires are doused. Mordecai survived this ordeal with his sanity intact, becoming the only person to do so in centuries. After the trial, he became a "Bearer of the Flame," administering the same trial to others, though transformed by his experience into a changed man.
