Yuzan the Marooned

Yuzan was a gentle and thoughtful man whose deep care for others led him to become a travelling doctor. He served aboard ships that journeyed far from his homeland of Yakai, where he not only treated sailors but also studied the natural world around him. During his travels, he took notes and sketched animals, plants, ancient relics and ruins, always eager to learn more. Sailors saw him as a symbol of good fortune, and his presence brought comfort to many. For years, he thrived in this life, full of purpose and curiosity. That luck came to a tragic end during one final voyage. A violent typhoon struck, smashing the ship apart. The storm tore through everything, and Yuzan awoke alone on a strange beach, surrounded by the remains of the vessel and his fallen crewmates. Grieving and disoriented, he wandered the island in search of food and water. Though the place was lush and beautiful, it was also filled with mysterious ruins from the long-lost Dragonkin Empire. Murals carved into stone showed rhinoceroses in elaborate armour, hinting at the island's forgotten history. Soon after, Yuzan encountered a sick rhinoceros blocking his path. Emaciated and bleeding, the animal was suffering from a disease he recognised from Yakai. Realising the creature's condition was beyond healing, Yuzan ended its pain with a swift cut to the throat. This act of compassion triggered a magical transformation, turning him into a Skinwalker. When he awoke, he found himself in the remains of an old camp, likely once used by Yakai sailors, which explained how the illness had reached the island. But the disease had spread far. Yuzan saw birds, deer, reptiles and more rhinos suffering the same fate. Driven by duty, he foraged for herbs and prepared medicines, capturing and healing as many animals as he could. One day, while searching for healing plants, he stumbled upon a hidden Dragonkin shrine decorated with rhinoceros statues. Inside, he discovered a full suit of ceremonial armour and a great blade, once made for the mighty creatures. Over time, he cleaned and studied the pieces before eventually wearing them himself. Now clad in this ancient armour, with a new hammer and shield by his side, Yuzan has made the island his home. Determined to protect it, he watches over the shores and ruins, keeping outsiders at bay. Sailors now speak of a horned guardian in heavy armour who stands on the cliffs, warning them to turn away. One of the Arbiter's Chroniclers, having heard these tales, now journeys to learn the truth behind the legend.
